My new studio set up

As I mentioned in my previous post, I have recently moved home. I am now in a Northern suburb of Brisbane. It is a lot quieter here, lots of nature about and my wife and I are really enjoying our new surroundings. My lovely wife has also allowed me to use a section of our garage as my new studio space. This is a fantastic upgrade for me. Plenty more space, a remote controlled roller shutter door so I can control the light levels entering the space. I am very chuffed indeed. Looking forward to see what I can produce in here now. We also have an office space upstairs where my PC and drawing table are located so I really have no excuses not be be anything but productive now :)

Kermit and Fozzy are now complete

12″x12″, Oil on Canvas.

12″x12″, Oil on Canvas.

I have recently moved home, and things have been a little chaotic. But I am back up and running again. These 2 paintings have just been varnished and are now fully finished.

Fozzy Bear underpainting now complete

Just a very quick post. The underpainting for the Fozzy Bear portrait was finished earlier today. In the next few days I shall begin my colour pass on all of the paintings I have on the go currently. More images to follow as these works near completion.

Muppet Portraits – WIP

I have a lot of different paintings on the go currently. My painting process these days involves doing a grisaille underpainting first. For some reason painting in an indirect fashion like this works so much better than alla prima/ wet in wet painting, well for me anyway :)

As is the norm at the moment I am learning lots of valuable lessons in the art of oil painting and my mediums and the certain paints I am using are really starting to speed up my work flow. I feel my work is slowly getting better and hopefully this can only lead to more painting confidence in the future.

Here are a few WIP paintings of Kermit and Fozzy Bear from the Muppets. These are both 12″x12″ Oil on Canvas.

Defiant Development – WIP painting

My first proper post of 2012 is this commission for Defiant Development, an indie game developer here in Brisbane.

This is 36″x30″ Oil on canvas, and probably the largest painting I have done in a very long time. It is my interpritation of the Defiant Logo, created by the very talented Pete Yong. I’m also including my photoshop colour rough I did to give the Defiant guys a bit of an impression of how the final paiting may look like.

It is still WIP and the underpainting is very nearly finished. Then as per usual it will require a colour pass and then the final adjustment phase. I am looking to have this all done and dusted and delivered to them by the 13th January, when they will have finally moved into their new office space. More images to follow as this nears completion.

2011 in review

Happy New Year everybody! I hope 2012 is a fantastic year for all of you.
Just got my blog stats back for the year and they are much better than I expected. Thanks to everyone who popped by, no matter how brief. 2012 is going to be a much busier year, that’s for sure and there will be plenty more paintings and posts done. Hopefully I can continue to improve with the old oil paints :)

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 4,300 times in 2011. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 4 trips to carry that many people.

Merry Christmas one and all…

Although I can use Photoshop, I don’t use it nearly enough now-a-days, due to my passion for getting back into oil painting. However since we are just a week away from Christmas day, and as I don’t have any new paintings in a fit state to post just yet, here are a few fairly quick festive digital paintings.

Not sure if I’ll get to do another post before the end of the year, so have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and successful New Year :)

21 of 21 Mario Characters are now complete

Way, way back in March, I posted 12 of the 21 Mario characters in this series.
I am ashamed to say that it has taken me up ’til now to complete these. But in my defence I have been doing other art work and these have not been high priority. But they are finished now and now I can show the whole series together.

Amazingly these have proven extremely popular, and I don’t want to be know as the guy who paints Mario characters!!!! But I can’t rule out doing more of these in the future.

Mario antagonists triptych

This triptych is the last 3 paintings in a (far too) long running series of Mario Characters I have been doing.
These have finally been finished, and are just about to be sent off to a collector in New York.

As with all paintings in this series, each one is 8″ x 8″, Oil on Canvas.
